Fact sheet Serif fonts are based on the Roman design, which evolved from Roman Capitals (upper case only) used in the ancient Empire. The early Europeans, in what remained of Carlus Magnus empire, created the lowercase characters, but kept the serifs, small finishing strokes at the end of arrms, stems, and tails of characters. This evolution can most significantly be seen through the Uncial calligraphy used by Middle Ages copyists. Serif typefaces are usually used to set text, since the serifs form a visual link, and are known to improve legibility. Most newspapers use serif fonts to set text.
